10 principles for interfaces people trust

Good interfaces feel obvious in hindsight. But behind that ease is a set of deliberate choices — small, disciplined decisions that add up to something people trust without thinking about it.

Over the years we've distilled our approach into a handful of principles. None of them are complicated, but applied consistently they change how a product feels.

1. Clarity beats cleverness

Every screen should answer one question quickly: what can I do here, and what happens next? When in doubt, remove. The best interface is the one users don't notice.

2. Feedback for every action

Nothing erodes trust faster than silence. A tap, a save, a delete — each should produce an immediate, unmistakable response. Motion, color and copy all play a role.

3. Consistency is kindness

Patterns that repeat let people learn once and apply everywhere. A consistent button, spacing scale and voice make an app feel calm and coherent.

These principles won't make design easy — but they'll make it honest. And honest design is the kind people come back to.
